Hi, I'm Heather. Sew New Ltd started in May 2015, when I decided that there had to be more to offer a hard working mum with over 20 years clothing industry experience.
I started sewing at the tender age of 4. Mum and I started making things both sewn and knitted. Mum started my career and lifelong love of making things and problem solving. What started out as making dolls clothes, progressed to making my own clothes, clothes for other people, curtains for friends and family to going to uni to learn more!
After learning how to make and alter patterns, to sewing a range of garments, to understanding fabrics and much more, I started my career in a made-to-measure factory making mens and ladies tailored suits.
I then travelled to and worked in various countries updating factories and teaching people to sew.
I moved to London, working in head offices of various organisations making garments fit better, make them fit for purpose and to improve the quality of garments throughout the high street.
I have worked on the Kelly Brook swimwear range, RAF collection, Morgan, The Disney Store, made suits for Next, Tesco, Burton, leading corporate wear companies, dresses and tailored items for Country Casuals, Hobbs, Laura Ashley, Phase 8 and lots lots more! At Evans, I developed a range of blocks for plus size women.
I have fitted, made patterns for, sewn and manufactured baby garments, childrenswear , ladies and menswear garments from bikinis and underwear to tailored suits. I've trained students, apprentices and staff in all areas of clothing.
Looking to change life for the better, I started Sew New Ltd with a view to help people get clothes that fitted, improve their surroundings and learn to sew.
We have since opened a one stop sewing shop where you can get your clothes to fit you and your loved ones, get your home/car/camper van kitted out with new curtains or cushions, learn how to sew using a normal sewing machine or an overlocker or upgrade your skills.
So if you want something sewn, fixed, made, want to learn new skills, buy gorgeous fabrics ,meet new people in our social classes, you know what you have to do....come to Sew New.
Thanks for reading.....
Heather
Marlene was Heather's inspiration for sewing and knitting as a child. She taught Heather the foundation of what she knows today, just as she was taught by her parents who could both knit socks by the fire.
She has knitted both for business and for pleasure. As a young mum, she tested patterns for Patons, making sure that the patterns worked. She also machine knitted for a local business and currently knits for a wide range of charities both in the UK and abroad.
Marlene is "queen of the unpicker" and is always happy to help.
Meet Darren, the Fabric man on the market. Darren and Heather started selling fabric on their own market stall during lockdown and Darren has since built up a steady following of dressmakers and crafters in the last few years on our regular markets who appreciate our choices of quality fabric. Check out our weekly posts on Facebook and Instagram to find out whereabouts the fabric stall for Sew New Fabrics will be that week!
